I’m an artist. How do I get more email subscribers?

As an artist, your email list is the key to your success long term. This article shares 6 ways to attract more email subscribers to your list.

In a previous post, we shared how Instagram is an excellent tool for building relationships and gaining exposure, but it shouldn't be your main sales channel. In this article, we'll share ways you can attract more email subscribers as an artist.

As an artist, gathering email subscribers can be a great way to keep in touch with your community of art lovers, promote your work, and - most importantly - sell your art. In our research, it showed up as the #1 way artists secure their career. Plus - we keep banging on about this - it is an asset that you own, and no one can take from you (unless of course you forget to back up your list!!).

Want some ideas on how to get more email subscribers?

Here are some steps you can take to gather more email subscribers:

  1. Offer something your Ideal Art Buyer would find irresistible: Create a free downloadable resource such as an e-book, a print-at-home artwork, or a tutorial related to your art. You might also run art giveaway. Offer this in exchange for their email address.

  2. Use social media: Use social media to promote your ‘irresistible offer’ and encourage people to sign up for your newsletter. You can also use social media to announce new content, events, and promotions, and encourage your followers to sign up for your newsletter. Share your offer in any online groups (Facebook groups/ Meet up groups) that you are part of.

  3. At events and exhibitions: When you run your art events and exhibitions, make sure you collect email addresses from interested visitors. You can offer a sign-up sheet or use a tablet or smartphone to collect email addresses. As an extra incentive, you could run a giveaway/ prize to people who sign up to your list on the day.

  4. Collaborate with other artists or businesses: Collaborate with other artists or businesses in your niche and offer to promote each other's newsletters to your respective audiences. This can be a great way to reach a wider audience and gather more email subscribers.

  5. Optimize your website and socials: Make sure your website and socials have a clear call-to-action to sign up for your newsletter, and place sign-up forms in prominent locations on your website, such as your homepage, sidebar, and footer.

What’s next?

Create a newsletter for your mailing list: Use an email marketing service (e.g. Mailchimp), or your website platform (e.g. Squarespace). Send regular updates to your subscribers, sharing stories about your art practice, new works, studio life, what inspires you.

Remember to always provide value to your email subscribers (and avoid spamming them with too many emails). Keep connected and watch your art career thrive!
